Water for Elephants

Just finished watching Water for Elephants. Here goes.
Water for Elephants is a 2011 Historical Drama directed by Francis Lawrence, written by Richard LaGravenese, and based on the novel by Sara Gruen. The film stars Robert Pattinson as Jacob Jankowski, Reese Witherspoon as Marlena Rosenbluth, and Christoph Waltz as August Rosenbluth. The movie follows Jacob Jankowski as he inadvertently joins the circus following the death of his parents. He had studied veterinary science at Cornell and convinced the ring leader to let him stay. I'm going to try not to give too much of the story away, but I will tell you that once the circus gets an elephant, Everything changes.
Robert Pattinson, is good in this movie, I usually don't like him, but I think this is one of his best performances. Also, his character is immensely weak fyi. It really feels like he let loose for the role and just went with it. Reese Witherspoon was pretty good in this movie. She seems kind of old to be Robert's love interest, but she does really well, and delivers a solid performance. Christoph Waltz was so good. His performance was so dramatic and intense, I couldn't help but love it. Everyone else was really good too, but I only have so much time here.
All in all, it was a good movie, but it did have some flaws.
First of all, a minor thing, but at some points it is deadly obvious that they did the audio in post-production, as things don't sync up that well. A big problem I had though, was how simple the characters emotions were. Robert was either exuberant or sad. Reese was either angry or lustful. Christoph was either hyper angry crazy or pleasantly happy. Also, it kind of feels like they tried to force him to be he Jew hunter from Inglorious Basterds and, at times, it seems like they went for a "What if the Jew hunter ran a circus?" feel to it. The actors worked with it, but I really noticed it throughout the movie.
Gripes aside, I did not regret seeing this movie, and I would recommend it if you've read the book or are interested in this movie. A warning however, the film does show the elephant being bloodily beaten and abused at some point, so if you can't handle that, maybe don't watch it (or close your eyes during those parts). 78%

OMFG!!!

So I haven't done a review in a long time (in internet time), so I'm going to write very short reviews for some of the movies I've seen in my absence. The movies have been seen within this time, so... yeah, mind the disclaimer.

Tangled: Rapunzel lives life and it is an awesomely beautiful metaphor for virginity  4.5/5
The Kids are All Right: Kids find donor dad and it is a very feminine story about lesbians and love. 4/5
The Room: The worst fucking  movie ever. Very little entertainment value until late in the film. 0.2/5
Sucker Punch: Girl goes to asylum and it is a feast for the eyes that leaves your mind starving. 3/5

God Damn it, there are alot of other ones that completely escape me.
Still, I will be continuing soon.
Majority of my time has been consumed by working on some sets and getting sucked in by My Little Pony.

The Fighter

Just finished watching The Fighter
The Fighter is a biographical drama directed by David O. Russell and starring Mark Wahlberg, Cristian Bale, Melissa Leo, and Amy Adams. The film revolves around Micky Ward's (Wahlberg) life during his rise in the boxing circuit. It chronicles the relationship with his then girlfriend, now wife, Charlene (Adams) , with his brother Dicky (Bale), as well as his sisters and his mom (Leo).
This is a very enthralling and amazing piece of film.The actors all had such great chemistry and it made the film feel all the more real. Mark Wahlberg's performance is the best I've seen in his entire career. Mark Wahlberg has a way of capturing that unbreakable underdog spirit and it really helps you forget that he was once known as Marky Mark. Bale's performance is phenomenal, definitely the best in the film. Bale takes control of every scene he's in and you grow to love his character. Adams plays a role that she's usually not put in to and owns it. She really shows how great of an actress she is by going from a sweet, innocent girl to a no-nonsense, sexy girlfriend. Leo was undoubtedly spectacular. I don't know much about her film career, so I can't say its her best, but she really captures that loving, overprotective mother figure. There are many other amazing characters, but we only have so much time. The story is amazing and the fight scenes get pretty heavy. I actually found myself cheering and yelling during the fights (something that doesn't usually happen to me in sports films). This film ranks among some of the greatest sports films of all time. I'd even go so far as to say that its up there with Raging Bull.
This is a phenomenal film that should appeal to everyone, whether you're looking for a great sports movie, a magnificent piece of film, or an all around great movie that will make you laugh, cry, and have you screaming like you're actually watching a boxing match. I strongly recommend this film to everyone.

Get Him to the Greek

. Get Him to the Greek is a 2010 comedy written and directed by Nicholas Stoller. The characters are based off of Jason Segel's characters in Forgetting Sarah Marshall.
The film revolves around Aaron Green (Jonah Hill) helping washed up rock star Aldous Snow (Russel Brand) get to a show at the Greek Theatre on the tenth anniversary of his iconic performance there. Green's boss Sergio Roma (P. Diddy) tells him to make sure Aldous gets to the show no matter what. Drugs, sex, and furry walls take over their trip and the awesomeness starts.
This is a hilarious movie. The comedic chemistry between Hill and Brand is wonderful. Though many people don't know it, Brand is actually an amazing comedian and that translates well into his acting. His performance embodies the washed up rock star persona. Hill's performance is so believable, he acts just as most people would to the crazy scenarios he's put in. He is essentially the voice of reason (that is constantly ignored). Then, we have the surprise comedic genius of the film, Sean "Diddy" Combs. Coming in to this film I doubted his performance would be that great, but he ended up making me laugh hysterically whenever he was on screen. All the minor characters also leave their mark on the films story in memorable ways, whether they're a hotel clerk/drug dealer or a  group of talent agents. This film is also packed with an awesome assortment of cameos, none of which will be revealed to leave you happily surprised when they appear on screen.
All in all, this movie is awesomely funny and I recommend it to anyone i n the mood to laugh, especially if you enjoyed Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Doctor Who Series 1

 I'd like to start off by saying that I'm a total whovian.
Now, let us begin.
This season marks the return of the longest running sci-fi tv series... EVER!
Christopher Eccleston takes the role of the Doctor, a time lord (the last of his species) and his adventures to protect the universe from any threat.
He is accompanied by his newly met acquaintance, Rose (played by the amazing Billie Piper) and on occasion her boyfriend (?) Mickey (played by Noel Clarke)
The relationship between the Doctor and Rose evolves as the season progresses and her relationship with Mickey becomes more of an annoyance than a loving couple.
When (my favorite character) Jack Harkness (played by John Barrowman) is introduced, he is a con man from the 51st century. Through the series, he evolves into a hero.
The Doctor travels around in his TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension(s) In Space) which allows hi to travel through... well... Time and Space.
They encounter many new enemies for the doctor, as well as the Doctor's most hated enemies, the Daleks.
The stories are compelling and enveloping. The characters are well developed and portrayed perfectly. And everything is conceptualized and put forward beautifully and magnificently. 
Any fan of sci-fi, good stories, or British stuff will do well to buy this (and the other seasons), netflix dvd queue it (all seasons are also on instant at the time of this writing), or obtain it through... other means.

Inception

Inception is a 2010 sci-fi action psychological heist thriller . The film is written and directed by Christopher Nolan. The film's amazing cast is led by Leonardo DiCaprio as Cobb. His performance is the best I've seen in his career. Next is Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Arthur. It's amazing seeing his performance after being a long time 3rd rock from the sun fan. He is the voice of reason in the macabre setting he is put into. Ellen Page co-stars as Ariadne. A naive architectural student thrust into being Cobb's architect. This film shows off her acting abilities beyond that of a pregnant teen. Many other characters populate this world (my favorite being Eames) but it's hard enough to put three performances into words.
The plot involves Cobb and his team (who go into people's dreams to steal valuable information) being enlisted by a businessman named Saito to perform inception (implanting an idea into someone's subconscious) on the son (Fischer) of a billionaire industrialist who is close to inheriting his fathers empire, in order to convince him to dissolve his father's company. The team enters his mind, with the only escape being when their job is over, or when they die (and go to limbo). All the time they are being challenged by Cobb's projection of his dead wife. As they go deeper, Fischer's subconscious fights back and they even enlist him in their cause. As to not spoil anymore, I'll just say that the ending leaves you questioning everything you just saw.
This is definitely one of the greatest films I've ever seen.The effects are some of the best, allowing them to be as abstract as possible given the dreams openness. The actors all deliver amazing , detailed, and believable performances that allow you to connect to each character on an individual level. It has some of the most memorable scenes including the zero-gravity fight scene and the Breakdown of the dream. This film will appeal to anyone with the slightest interest in good films, though I have found that much of the older viewers (not Old old, about 40+... or maybe it's just parents in general) have trouble following the story and understanding it. The film is great and NEEDS to be seen more than once, everytime you watch it you discover something new and amazing. This is definitely a movie everyone needs to see.

Saints Row 2

 

Damn, I'm just churning out reviews today.
Saints row 2 is a sandbox 3rd person shooter developed by Volition and published by THQ. Though to many this may seem like a GTA knockoff, that simply just isn't the case. The story revolves around you, the nameless protagonist, awaking from a coma to find that your gang has completely disappeared. Your goal is to rebuild it and dominate all of stillwater. With help from old allies as well as new ones you can eventually rule this town.
Regardless of what it may seem like, this game is anything but serious. While a lot of the story has a serious tone, when you just explore the world, you can have one of the most ridiculous and fun gaming experiences ever. From naked skydiving to driving around and murdering a litterer for a cop show, this game is crazy for the sake of entertainment. Cheats (yes, cheats) are a very interesting way to spice up your gameplay. Imagine walking around with an unlimited ammo rpg shooting at everything that moves while wearing a zombie mask and having the never die cheat enabled. You can essentially turn this game into your own personal weapon-capable zombie simulator. Customization gets crazy too. From being able to add spikes to your wheels to knock out any nearby pedestrians, or making your entire gang dress like ninjas or businessmen. This game never gets boring with the multitude of different things available. With a great list of activities and a hilarious script behind it, this game is definitely one of my favorites, and I highly recommend it.

Troll 2

Well, this is a bold step. I'm writing my first review on what is considered to be one of the worst films of all time.
Here goes.
Troll 2 is (supposedly) a horror film. The film was written directed by Claudio Fragasso. The main plot of the film involves a family moving to a small town called Nilbog (it's goblin backwards!!!) where only the son can see what's going on around them. With help from his grandfather's ghost (who tends to show up in the wrong room) the boy discovers that the town is infested by vegan goblins, dead set on turning the family into plants in order to consume them.
This film is undoubtedly horrible. The production quality as well as the writing and score are atrocious and lack any relevance to the events. Regardless of its shortcomings, however large they may be, this movie is hilarious. The sheer stupidity of the film makes it one of the most entertaining I've ever seen. The film begins with a "suspenseful" chase through the woods set to the a very "appropriate" dance-pop song. The scenes just get worse, and many are forever ingrained in the viewer's mind., from a scene where the son urinates on his family's dinner in order to save them from being turned to plants, to the infamous "OH MY GOD!" scene (just watch it). Everything about this film tells me to hate it and put it off as the worst thing I've ever seen. But its campy stupidity gives it a special place in my heart, and I highly recommend it for anyone looking for a good laugh.
